As the growing plight of these children continues, we ask ourselves, “What can be done?” Governmental agencies dedicated to these problems are overwhelmed and under-resourced, and the process of becoming an officially recognized casa hogar is at its best, expensive, rigorous, and lengthy. Consequently, despite the good intentions, only a few casa hogars survive the process.
There is only one other existing casa hogar in Ocotlan and it only serves young girls. Compassion instills hope and makes those who suffer more amenable to helping themselves.
Mexican culture is well known for its belief in God and its reverence for children, yet street children are often met with an attitude of indifference.
Compassion sends a different message. It says, “You are important to me, because you are a child of God and He loves you.”
